The Plateau State Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Mineral Development has apprehended over 100 illegal miners in Jos, the state capital, as part of an ongoing crackdown to tackle environmental degradation and protect the state’s natural resources.

The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr. Yabilsu Dogo, disclosed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday, underscoring the government’s commitment to curbing the damaging effects of unregulated mining activities.

The operation, which was carried out in collaboration with the police, is aimed at addressing the growing threat posed by illegal mining across Plateau State. Dogo expressed concern over the widespread environmental damage resulting from these activities, highlighting that unregulated mining has weakened the land’s soil structure, making it prone to collapse. “Illegal mining has led to significant land degradation, increasing the risk of land subsidence and sinkholes,” Dogo stated.

He further warned that if the current trend continues, the state could experience more incidents of land subsidence, which could compromise buildings, roads, and other critical infrastructure. Dogo pointed to the collapse of several buildings in Jos last year, linking the incidents directly to the destabilizing effects of unregulated mining, particularly in areas subjected to extensive illegal excavations.

According to Dogo, the consequences of illegal mining extend beyond environmental damage. He noted that illegal miners, working in hazardous conditions without any safety measures, often fall victim to accidents. Several individuals have reportedly lost their lives after being trapped in the deep pits and tunnels they dug without proper precautions. These tragic incidents, Dogo noted, are a stark reminder of the dangers associated with unregulated mining.

In addition to the human and environmental toll, illegal mining has also led to significant economic losses for the state. Dogo lamented that Plateau State is losing substantial revenue due to the illegal extraction of minerals, which deprives the government of much-needed funds that could otherwise be channeled into development projects. “Illegal mining is not only damaging the environment but also depriving the state of critical revenue that could improve the lives of our people,” he explained.

To combat these challenges, the Plateau State government has taken a multi-pronged approach. While enforcement operations are ongoing, the government is also focusing on raising public awareness about the dangers of illegal mining. According to Dogo, the ministry is conducting public education campaigns to inform communities about the risks associated with unregulated mining and the importance of adopting sustainable practices.

Moreover, the state is exploring alternative livelihood options for individuals involved in illegal mining. Recognizing that many people rely on mining for their survival, Dogo emphasized that the government is committed to providing alternative sources of income for those affected by the crackdown. “Our goal is not just to stop illegal mining but to offer viable alternatives to those involved, ensuring they can support their families through legal means,” he said.

The government’s efforts reflect a broader strategy aimed at safeguarding Plateau State’s natural resources and infrastructure while simultaneously addressing the root causes of illegal mining. By balancing enforcement with public education and economic alternatives, the state hopes to protect both the environment and the livelihoods of its citizens.

Dogo also stressed that responsible mining practices are key to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the state’s mineral resources. “We want to create an environment where mining activities can take place, but in a way that is safe, regulated, and beneficial to everyone,” he added. The government is, therefore, working with licensed mining operators to ensure that all mining activities in the state adhere to environmental and safety standards.
