Governor Caleb Mutfwang Suspends Mining Activities in Plateau State to Combat Illegal Mining and Enhance Safety

In a decisive move aimed at reshaping Plateau State’s mining sector, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang has temporarily suspended all mining activities within the state.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ engagement meeting held on Friday, February 21, 2025, at the New Government House in Little Rayfield, the governor emphasized the need to protect the environment and the people from the negative impacts of illegal mining, while promising comprehensive reforms.

Addressing key players in the mining sector alongside traditional rulers, Governor Mutfwang acknowledged the critical role of the state’s mineral wealth but raised alarm over the unregulated and hazardous mining practices currently endangering communities.

“We remain committed to upholding the Constitution and ensuring that the benefits of our mineral wealth translate into tangible improvements in the lives of our people. We recognize the sacrifices of Plateau citizens in the mining sector, and we reaffirm our pledge to protect their interests,” Governor Mutfwang stated.

He highlighted several issues plaguing the sector, including unregulated mining, illegal operations, and the social consequences affecting communities, particularly children.

“Many young people are dropping out of school to engage in artisanal mining, leading to increased cases of child labor, drug abuse, prostitution, and the spread of communicable diseases,” he noted, calling on stakeholders to embrace reform measures to reverse the situation.

As part of these reforms, the governor inaugurated a Technical Committee on Mining Reform, which will be tasked with restructuring the sector. The committee will verify mining licenses, regulate illegal mining, and recommend locations for designated mining villages to prevent the spread of hazardous practices in residential areas.

“We must not allow our people to perish in unsafe mining pits, nor should we let our children drop out of school due to short-term economic gains,” he declared, urging unity among stakeholders to create a safe and sustainable mining environment.

Governor Mutfwang assured the public that security agencies would be empowered to curb illegal mining and ensure environmental protection. He also expressed his commitment to empowering local miners by formalizing their activities and providing access to modern mining technologies.

As the state takes a bold step to reform the mining sector, Governor Mutfwang’s call for responsible mining resonates as a message of hope for both current and future generations.
