More Authentic Weapons Recovered As OPSH Raid, Arrest More Gunrunners in Plateau State

Operation SAFE HAVEN, the security outfit responsible for maintaining peace in Plateau State and its environs, has continued its crackdown on criminal activities.

Following the arrest of five notorious gunrunners and the recovery of authentic weapons and over 6,000 rounds of ammunition on 17 September 2024 in Jos North LGA, the security agency launched a follow-up operation in Bokkos town, Bokkos LGA on 18 September 2024.

During the intelligence-led sting operation in Bokkos LGA, security forces uncovered another criminal syndicate. The criminals were in the process of finalizing an illegal arms transaction valued at Five Million Naira (N5,000,000.00) at the Banana Island Hotel. Two suspects, identified as Matawal Bitrus and Thomas Benedict, were arrested.

The operation also led to the recovery of several automatic weapons, including two AK-47 rifles, one automatic pistol, two AK-47 magazines, and one Baretta pistol magazine. These items were seized to prevent their further use in criminal activities across the region.

The suspects are currently in custody and undergoing interrogation. According to Operation SAFE HAVEN, the goal is to extract valuable information from the suspects that could lead to the arrest of other members of the gunrunning syndicate still at large. This series of arrests confirms the security agency’s commitment to tackling criminal elements, regardless of ethnic or religious affiliation.

Major Samson Nantip Zhakom, the Military Public Information Officer for Operation SAFE HAVEN, emphasized that criminality affects everyone and should be combated collectively. He noted that the proliferation of firearms poses a serious security threat, and the security outfit is determined to clamp down on illegal arms dealers.

In a bid to further engage the community, the people of Plateau, Bauchi, and Southern Kaduna are encouraged to provide credible information to security agencies. Such cooperation is seen as essential in maintaining a crime-free environment and ensuring the safety of law-abiding citizens.

For prompt responses to any security concerns, the public is reminded that Operation SAFE HAVEN has a newly activated 24-hour toll-free line (08000020203) available for reporting security threats and passing information. The security agency reassures citizens that all credible reports will be acted upon swiftly.
