Security has been tightened in Jos, the Plateau state capital and environs as the State Independent Electoral Commission begins conduct of Local Government Areas elections today.

Jay FM reports that elections are being conducted in the 17 LGAs of the state to elect their chairmen and councillors.

Our correspondent monitoring the election reports that Armoured Personnel Carrier belonging to the police bomb squad and other security vehicles were seen stationed at strategic positions in Jos and environs.

Stern-looking security personnel were also seen manning security at various locations in and around the PLASIEC headquarters located at the John Samci road in the state capital.

The adjoining streets to the commission were also blocked by heavily armed security men.

Further checks by our correspondent show that other major roads in and out of Jos were also blocked by security personnel as early as 7 a.m. to forestall any breakdown of law and order.
