1. The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the establishment of a Disaster Management Fund. This was disclosed to journalists on Monday by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, at the State House, Abuja, after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
2. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said the current hardship is short-term while the gains that will accrue there from will be long-term. He said the citizens’ sacrifices would soon usher in an era of enduring economic benefits for all. The President restated his administration’s commitment to tackling the country’s economic and security challenges, emphasising the intricate link between the two.
3. A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to henceforth delete the name of the promoter of Sunrise Power and Transmission Company Limited, Leno Adesanya, from its list of wanted persons. The court said Adesanya’s name should not be linked with criminal allegations associated with the $6 billion Mambilla hydropower project contract.
4. Notorious bandit commander, Kachalla Tukur Sharme, linked to kidnap of 121 Bethel Baptist High School students in Kaduna and two members of a rival gang have been killed in a violent clash between their groups in the forests around Rijana and Kaso, Kaduna State.
5. Former governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, has said Governor Godwin Obaseki is politically dead. Oshiomhole stated this while commenting on the outcome of the just concluded governorship election in the state during an interview on Channels TV. According to him, the outcome of the election represented the will of Edo people.
6. National chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has said the party would use its template in the Edo State governorship election to win the November 16 election in Ondo State. He said a big party like the APC ought to have been fully in charge of the South East geo-political zone, and urged party leaders at all levels to work hard towards actualising the party’s objectives.
7. Yiaga Africa, one of the accredited observers of Saturday’s off-cycle governorship election in Edo State, has said the poll failed integrity test, as there was widespread manipulation of results. This is contained in the post-election statement of the organisation on the governorship election, co-signed by Dr. Aisha Abdullahi, Chair of the 2024 Edo Election Mission, and Samson Itodo, Executive Director, Yiaga Africa.
8. The President and Chief Executive of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has called on the Federal Government to end fuel subsidies completely. He said the removal would help determine the actual petrol consumption in the country, as he confirmed ownership of two oil blocks in the upstream sector with an expected production date of next month.
9. The Kogi State House of Assembly, on Monday, called for the sacking of the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, over what the Assembly described as the unprofessional handling of the corruption case against the immediate-past Kogi governor, Yahaya Bello. The legislators condemned EFCC’s siege to the Kogi State’s Governor’s Lodge in Abuja, in an attempt to arrest Bello last Wednesday.
10. The average retail price of Automotive Gas Oil, popularly called diesel, in Nigeria surged by 64.58 per cent year-on-year, reaching N1,406.05/litre in August 2024 compared to the N854.32/litre recorded in the same month last year. This is according to the National Bureau of Statistics Automotive Gas Oil (Diesel) Price Watch Report for September 2024 released on Monday.
