In a press release, the SUG highlighted the sharp rise from ₦130,000 to ₦200,000, excluding an additional ₦30,000 for acceptance fees, as overwhelming for both students and their families.
Following consultations with Faculty Presidents, Departmental Presidents, Tribal Heads, and past and current union leaders, the SUG announced a series of actions to address the situation. These include withholding school fees payments until negotiations with the university management conclude.
As a sign of solidarity, the SUG has urged all students to wear black attire tomorrow and collect “Solidarity Tags” available in various faculties. The union has also suspended the collection of departmental, faculty, and SUG dues until further notice.
While the SUG remains committed to engaging the university management in discussions, they have warned that should there be no reasonable resolution, further actions will be taken. The union expressed deep concerns over the recurring fee increments, stressing the financial burden this places on students and their families.
The SUG called on returning students to join the movement by withholding their school fees payments and vowed to escalate their actions if the issue remains unresolved.
In solidarity, they emphasized their determination to fight for the rights of all students at the University of Jos.
